Communities across Mayo celebrate local climate action
Ireland’s 10th Climate Action Week has been a resounding success with hundreds of events taking place across the country. Communities across Mayo joined-in and showcased their own actions through a series of climate action events.
With the support of Mayo County Council over 30 community-led events took place from October 9 to October 21. There was a significant increase in the number of events this year as communities keenly showcased positive action in their areas. The events were free and open to all, and included film screenings, children’s art classes, swap and repair workshops, food growing, cooking and preserving demonstrations, energy saving advice talks and local biodiversity walks.
The overall aim of the week was to raise awareness, celebrate local resilience and inspire positive change. There was something for all interests at various times and locations around the county, helping people to exchange practical tips on how small steps taken at an individual and community level can support climate action.
Many groups reported it was an ideal opportunity to connect with each other, and commented that the intergenerational connection between younger and older members of the community was beautiful to watch, as they shared stories and their love of nature, inspiring positive action for a greener future.
