Maxwell hits out over inaction to address Mayo pier repairs

A WEST Mayo councillor has hit out over inaction to address damage to a coastal pier.

A year ago, Councillor Chris Maxwell made a 'stitch in time' plea in relation to Lecanvey Pier, outside Westport.

However, following storms last weekend, he said it is apparent the 'stitch' hadn't come in time, sharing photos and a video of the pier.

Writing on his social media, Councillor Maxwell explained: “In October 2025, I reported a problem with Lecanvey pier to Mayo County Council. In November 2025, Michael O'Boyle of the marine section within Mayo County Council visited Lecanvey, Carramore and Sickeen piers with myself to view erosion damage with the purpose to organise repair works.

“At the August 2026 meeting of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, I pushed for answers as to why works had not commenced, quoting the old saying 'a stitch in time saves nine'.

“I was told Lecanvey pier needed further inspections and that there was no indication of immediate risk to the overall stability of the structure. However, arrangements were being made for a detailed structural survey which would determine any repairs necessary.

“After the weekend's storms, it is very apparent that 'the stitch' hadn’t come in time. I done my own structural survey this afternoon in less than four minutes.

“In my opinion, these are my conclusions:

1. The pier could be undermined.

2. The rock armour could be tore apart this winter.

3. Immediate work needs to be carried out now.

4. A small job has turned into a massive one.

5. If the relevant authorities listened to the councillors on the ground and acted this could have been avoided.”
