Historic Mayo building set to return to civic use after long absence
Marsh House - the former HQ of the now defunct Castlebar Urban Council - is returning to civic use, The Connaught Telegraph has learned.
With planned refurbishment works to the Áras An Chontae building at the Mall in the town progressing, Mayo County Council intends to accommodate staff on a phased basis at Marsh House as works move through the various sections of the building.
This will provide essential decant space and ensure services can continue to operate throughout the construction period, which is due to commence shortly.
As a result, Marsh House is not be available for lease, and the council will be advising interested parties accordingly.
Discussions had surfaced recently regarding future uses for the site, including proposals for a tuition centre, with local elected representatives calling for clarity on the issue.
The historic property was used in more recent times by Castlebar Educate Together National School.
The school opened initially in Cavendish Lane in 2016 and moved to Marsh House in Newtown in 2017.
Marsh House was originally built as the family home of the O'Malley family, who served as agents for the local landlord, Lord Lucan.
On September 19, 1979, the Urban District Council (UDC) moved into Marsh House after purchasing the property for £18,000, eventually functioning as municipal offices for Castlebar Town Council.
The Castlebar Community Clean-Up Group has regularly carried out volunteer efforts to clear overgrown grounds, tidy the area, and manage fallen autumn leaves around Marsh House.
