Irish conservation documentary coming to Mayo cinema

AS the evocative call of the corncrake fades from Ireland’s western seaboard, communities unite to save a bird whose disappearance would mean losing a piece of Irish heritage forever.

Answering the Call is a contemplative documentary that follows the fragile survival of Ireland’s corncrake, one of the country’s most endangered birds. Set against the windswept beauty of the Atlantic coast, the film traces the efforts of ecologists, farmers, and volunteers working to restore habitats and revive the bird’s elusive nocturnal call.

A quiet ode to stewardship, where every gesture carries the weight of hope, the film expands its lens to central Africa, revealing the corncrake’s migratory path and the global interdependence of ecosystems. Answering the Call is not just a portrait of a species in peril, but a meditation on patience, devotion, and the human capacity to mend what we’ve broken.

Director Martin Danneels commented: “Answering the Call grew from a desire to slow down and listen, not just to the corncrake’s nocturnal call, but to the people who have doggedly refused to let that call fall silent. This film is my attempt to honour everyone’s devotion, and show that conservation is not only a science, but that patience, care, and a belief can also be meaningful when people choose to act. I can’t wait for audiences in Mayo to see it.”

The documentary will be shown in Mayo Movie World, Castlebar, this month. Check local listings for details.
