Pride of Place Award celebrations for Mayo Alzheimer's group
There has been great celebration in Foxford and across County Mayo after Foxford Alzheimer’s Community Trust (FACT) claimed the top award in the Age Friendly Communities Category at the prestigious IPB Pride of Place Awards in Dublin.
FACT emerged victorious against strong competition from across Ireland, while Ballina Autism Friendly Town (BAFT) earned an impressive runner-up placing in the Inclusive Communities Category.
Although Clogher Environmental Group CLG did not secure an award on the night, the group was warmly acknowledged for its outstanding contribution to community development and environmental sustainability.
The IPB Pride of Place Awards, organised by Co-operation Ireland in partnership with local authorities across the island, celebrate the remarkable work being undertaken by communities to enhance quality of life and create vibrant, inclusive places to live.
Hosted by former RTÉ broadcaster Joe Duffy at the Convention Centre Dublin, this year’s awards welcomed more than 400 community groups from across Ireland.
The event also marked a significant milestone for title sponsor IPB Insurance, which is celebrating 100 years in operation.
Earlier this year, Mayo County Council nominated three groups for the competition: FACT, BAFT and Clogher Environmental Group CLG.
Following their shortlisting, members of the judging panel visited each community in July to experience first-hand the exceptional initiatives being delivered by volunteers and community leaders.
Congratulating FACT on its success, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor John Caulfield, said: “I was absolutely delighted to see FACT receive this prestigious national award. It was a privilege to be present at the awards ceremony and to celebrate this well-deserved achievement with everyone involved.
“FACT has created a truly exceptional community resource for people living with dementia and their families.
"The organisation provides a welcoming, supportive and non-clinical environment where individuals can socialise, participate in activities and remain connected to their community, while also giving families reassurance that their loved ones are receiving excellent care and support.”
Speaking about Ballina Autism Friendly Town, Cllr Caulfield added: “BAFT should take great pride in achieving runner-up status in such a competitive category. Its ongoing commitment to making Ballina a more accessible, inclusive and supportive town for autistic people and their families has made a real and lasting difference within the community.”
He also praised the efforts of Clogher Environmental Group CLG.
“While they did not take home an award on this occasion, Clogher Environmental Group has demonstrated what can be achieved through dedication, vision and strong community spirit.
"The group should be immensely proud of everything it has accomplished and the positive impact it continues to make.”
Deirdre Finnerty, Head of Community Engagement with Mayo County Council, also welcomed the recognition received by Mayo communities.
“It is fantastic to see FACT recognised with a national award and to see BAFT receive such high praise for its work. Congratulations to both groups, and to Clogher Environmental Group CLG for representing Mayo so positively on the national stage.
“Across County Mayo, community groups and volunteers continue to make an extraordinary contribution to the places where they live. Their commitment, energy and passion help make Mayo a great place to live, work, visit and invest.
“The Pride of Place Awards provide an important opportunity to recognise and celebrate the exceptional work being carried out by communities throughout Ireland.
"Seeing Mayo represented so strongly, with one category winner and another runner-up, is a wonderful achievement and an inspiration to communities across the county.”
In their citation, the judges praised FACT for its commitment to inclusion and community wellbeing, stating: “FACT promotes community wellbeing through social events, creative programmes and outreach initiatives, with an approach that values accessibility, respect, inclusion and age-friendly participation.
"Fabulous Foxford. Congratulations on your amazing win.”
The success of FACT and the strong performances of BAFT and Clogher Environmental Group CLG reflect the strength, dedication and community spirit that continues to thrive throughout County Mayo.
