Hypnotherapist Laura can really change your life!

Laura McDonald

DO you wish to make a change in your life, whether it be to stop smoking, gain a bit more confidence, or just get rid of negative emotional energies? Do you feel unsettled, or find it hard to relax? BWRT or hypnotherapy could be just what you need to make real, lasting differences to your life, writes Tom Gillespie.

Laura McDonald is a clinical hypnotherapist and BrainWorking Recursive therapist. She can help you let go of old habits, beliefs, thoughts and behaviours that you feel no longer serve you well.

Using powerful techniques from a choice of therapies, you can take control of what goes on in your mind, allowing you to live a freer, more contented life.

Laura is daughter of the late Denise Henaghan of Ellison Street, Castlebar. Her sister is Joyce Prendergast, Castle Street, and Denise’s brother was the late pharmacist and councillor, John Henaghan.

Laura’s grandparents were Marjorie and Dr. Brendan Henaghan, Ellison Street.

Since 2004 Laura has assisted with a number of issues, including smoking cessation, stress, PTSD, weight loss, childhood trauma, abuse, childbirth and so much more. Laura uses a range of different therapies, from hypnosis, EFT, life coaching, and BWRT.

Clients, she said, leave feeling empowered, with a sense of clarity, and tools to help themselves as often as they wish.

Laura, a mother of four, trained in hypnotherapy with the Institute of Clinical Hypnosis, London, in 2004.

She said: “I began with the foundation course, continued on to do the professional course, and studied a further diploma in the advanced professional course. I set up my practice as soon as I qualified, starting in a Notting Hill SureStart clinic specialising in helping pregnant women give up smoking. It was the start of a wonderful new career.

In 2006, I began practicing in the Chaim Centre, Willesden Green, London. I spent a year there before moving to Ireland where I set up my practice in Kachina Alternative Health and Beauty Clinic, Castlebar, in February 2007, and have been there ever since.

Over the years I have continued to expand my knowledge, studying weight management, reiki, healing, life coaching, emotional freedom technique, NLP, stress management, and the amazing new BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT), a model of psychology and psychotherapy created by UK professional therapist Terence Watts, MCGI.

It’s a totally confidential method that does not require you to reveal your private information or personal secrets to your therapist and it is carried out in a completely conscious state.

It does not use hypnosis or any concepts that might be considered mystical or unscientific - it’s completely logical, practical and down-to-earth, and for it to succeed only needs you to know what you want to change in your life. Only certified practitioners have been trained to deliver BWRT and all have to adhere to a strict ethical code.”

As is a requirement of her work, Laura carries out regular continued professional development and loves taking the opportunity to study both within and outside the fields of the mind.

Due to running her training schools and her BWRT supervisor commitments, Laura's designated client day is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in Kachina, Castlebar.

Laura, who is married to Joe McDonald of Main Street, continued: “My mother was born and raised in Castlebar, and she moved to London where I was born and raised. Eleven years ago I came back to Castlebar and continued my work as a therapist in Kachina Alternative Health and Beauty, where I am still practicing today.

I offer treatments such as hypnotherapy and BWRT for mind-related issues such as stress, anxiety, symptoms of depression, confidence, childbirth, smoking cessation, weight loss, as well as more complex issues such as trauma, abuse, and so much more.

I feel so passionate about the area of mental health and would love there to be more resources for those suffering. This is why, to make it more accessible for people, I set up my own hypnotherapy training school - the first and only hypnotherapy school in Connaught - in 2016.

By teaching others how to be clinical hypnotherapists, we have more professional practitioners available to help people with such a diverse range of issues.

There are many misconceptions around hypnosis and hypnotherapy and I am determined to change that. It is a highly effective, fast tool for rapid change within individuals, as we can access the subconscious directly, unlike any other therapy which can take a prolonged period of time, often with very slight results.

My first course was a huge success. I had seven students from different areas around the country. I held it in Breaffy House Resort, thus bringing business to the area, and as well as that we all ate in the hotel and some stayed there. It is a 10-weekend course, spread from September to June each year. All seven students passed their exams (marked by external examiners) and we held our graduation in the House of Plates.

This year I am holding the course at Lough Lannagh Village and I have five students, none of them local, travelling once a month for 10 months from Galway, Newry and Dublin. They all stay locally, and eat in the local restaurants in their lunch hour. All course materials are bought in local shops and printers.

I aim for my training school to grow from strength to strength each year, and am already taking applications for the next course, starting in September 2018. Upon successful completion, students gain two diplomas and are ready and fully able to go into private professional practice.

Most students, past and present, are already in self-employment of a therapy kind, but anyone is welcome to join the course. It is €2,500 for the duration, which includes everything: five books, extensive course notes, guest speakers, exam costs, audio support and continued support forever after they have completed the course. Graduates are also listed (if they wish) on our website. I offer a payment plan of 10 payments of €250, which most students have chosen, and they pay each month.”
