Fond memories of gentle giant Bob Shannon Jr.

BOB Shannon Jr., a member of the Quaker City String Band, who has died, is being fondly remembered in Kiltimagh.

He had been a visitor to the town for over three decades, making many friends along the way as the 'Quakers' became a popular highlight at the annual St. Patrick's Day parade.

His passing comes just as the town gets ready to welcome another visit by members of the Quaker City String Band next week for the St. Patrick's Day parade, with which the band has been synonymous for many years.

Parade organisers, on their Kiltimagh Tourism Festivals Facebook page, paid the following tribute to Bob:

'It is with immense sadness that we learned of the passing of Kiltimagh’s dear friend Bob Shannon Jr, of the Quaker City String Band.

'Captain Bob made his first visit to Kiltimagh with QCSB over 30 years ago and has made many, many visits since along with his wife Susan and their family.

'Bob's presence in our town brought so much joy to so many people, so many friendships fused and memories made. There are few people who don’t have their memories of this gentle giant.

'Susan Ryan-Shannon, our thoughts are with you and your family at this time, along with the QCSB family. Bob will always hold a special place in the hearts of Kiltimagh and will always be remembered. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.'
