A MAYO man has won the 2019 British and Irish Open Freestyle Draughts Championship.

This year it was Ireland's turn to host the event and it was held in the Town House Hotel in Naas, Co. Kildare. The emergence of an Irish winner proved a very popular outcome.

Played over three days, Frank Moran, a native of Shunnagh, Parke, Castlebar, emerged as winner of the title.

In the final round, Frank just edged out Tom Kee, an international master from Colchester in England. Earlier on the final day Frank beat Northern Ireland champion Francis McNally from Co. Tyrone and former British champion Colin Young from Scotland.

Frank Moran is also the current English Open Draughts Champion, a title he won on the Isle of Wight last year.
