US scholarship for Mayo soccer star

MARTIN Walsh of Scoil Muire agus Padraig, Swinford, and Swinford FC, will be heading to the USA to take up a prestigious football scholarship this week.

He will be joining Cumberland University, located in Lebanon, Tennessee, where he study and play for the Phoenix soccer team.

This is a massive opportunity for the young Swinford player as he will have the opportunity to combine his university studies alongside playing high level football and training full-time for the next four years.

The scholarship has been gained through the assistance of PASS4Soccer Scholarships.

Martin’s achievement in gaining such a quality opportunity is in recognition of both his academic achievements to date and athletic ability. He took part in a USA Coach Showcase held at AUL Complex, Dublin, in December 2017 to help further exposure to universities in the USA and those reviewing the video footage online.

PASS4Soccer general manager said: “Martin came into the P4S system very late in the process and was a joy to work with.

He is a very level headed individual who comes from a very good footballing background having had experience with Athlone Town Football Club and Sligo Rovers.

His direct style of play in the attacking areas will guarantee an immediate impact for the college program and the opportunity to combine full time football and a quality education was something that has inspired Martin to choose Cumberland University.”

Places in the PASS4Soccer Network Program are now available for students seeking to enter a US university soccer programme in August 2019 and 2020.

PASS4Soccer will be holding information and assessment days in the following locations for budding young stars: September in Kerry and Kilkenny; October in Dublin and Waterford, and November in Dublin, Limerick and Belfast.
