Work on new castlebar primary care centre to start soon

AGREEMENT has been finalised for the development of a primary care centre at Moneen, Castlebar, by Abbey Álainn Limited, The Connaught Telegraph has learned.

The facility will be staffed by 10 doctors and 42 staff members, providing a range of primary care services.

The community mental health sector headquarters will be located in the centre where day hospital accommodation is also being provided.

Planning permission for the project has been granted and construction work is due to start before the end of March.

The centre is part of a large development which includes continuation care beds, patient discharge medical beds, dementia units, ancillary care services and independent living accommodation.

A member of the HSE West Forum, Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, said the facility is badly needed at a time of growing pressures on the nursing staff at Mayo General Hospital.

“I hope it alleviates many of the problems currently being experienced without our health system,” he said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Leo Varadkar inspected the facilities at Mayo General Hospital last weekend during the Fine Gael national conference.
