Mortimer seeks fianna fil nomination

SHRULE native Eric Mortimer has announced he’s to seek the Fianna Fáil nomination to run in the Galway West constituency.

Mr. Mortimer is well-liked and has already received some party support in having been nominated for Fianna Fáil convention, which will choose three candidates for next year’s general election in the new Galway West constituency, which includes a part of south Mayo. The convention will be held at the Clayton Hotel next Thursday.

Now living in Knocknacarra, he has a track record of voluntary involvement in sport, charity fundraising and in his role as shop steward in his workplace. Working in the ISS Department at NUI Galway, he is well known on campus by staff and students alike.

No stranger to working for the benefit of peoples’ rights, as a member of staff in NUI Galway since 2000 he has been a SIPTU shop steward since 2003, and has also been elected as a staff representative to the NUI Galway University Governing Authority (Udarás na hOllscoile) since 2005.

Eric has a passion for sport having played GAA for two decades with Shrule-Glencorrib and in recent years represented St. Michael’s, based in the west side of Galway city.

With close university ties, Eric is well positioned to gain a sizeable vote from the 2,500 staff and 17,500 students.

As well as the Galway city connections, Eric’s family are actively involved in business in south Mayo - Mortimer’s Quarries, J.J. Burke Car Sales.

His cousins, Kenneth, Trevor and Conor Mortimer, played for the Mayo senior football team throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
