Former Castlebar Mitchels star dies in Chicago

THE death has taken place in Chicago of Peter Horkan, a native of Spencer Street, Castlebar.

Aged 93 years, he played with Castlebar Mitchels, winning a Mayo senior county championship medal in the 1950s.

A tribute to him on the Castlebar Mitchels website stated: “He was one of three brothers to win senior county championship medals with Mitchels. Patsy won nine during the 1950s and 60s while Seamus (deceased) was a member of the 1962 and 1963 winning sides.

“Peter played for Mayo in an All-Ireland Junior final, losing to Cork in 1951 before emigrating to America, settling in Chicago.

“Castlebar Mitchels presented a citation to him in October 2016 as one of the oldest surviving senior championship winners with Mitchels.

“When his family from Castlebar visited Peter in November last year they presented his great grandson with a Mitchels jersey which he wore for the last family photograph taken with them.”

Deepest sympathy is extended to Peter's brothers Patsy, Sean, Eamon and Henry (Castlebar) and sisters Betty O' Neill (Sligo) and Alice Fox (Wicklow).
