Community fears over rise in rural drugs problem

A MAYO TD has stated the increased availability of illegal drugs in rural areas has led to fears in communities.

Deputy Dara Calleary said the problem is no longer exclusive to large towns and cities.

He stated rural communities needed help in addressing the situation.

The Fianna Fàil deputy leader called on the Minister of Justice to ensure An Garda Siochana is provided with the resourses, skills and knowledge to deal with this escalating situation.

The Mayo Garda Drugs Unit has made a number of significant detections in recent weeks.

But concerns remain that the battle facing the gardai in fighting the rise in illegal drugs has become increasingly challenging due to limited resources.
