Knockmore catch the eye as big guns advance

THERE were no major shocks in the second round of the Mayo senior football championship played over the weekend as all the big guns rolled on to as good as book their places in the last eight with a round remaining.

Breaffy, however, will feel a shade fortunate to return from Carramore with a win as they trailed at one stage by six points.

But Hollymount-Carramore let this one slip by as Liam Irwin slotted home a vital penalty and Breaffy were gifted a second goal straight from the kickout which was scored by Eimhin Morrin.

County champions Castlebar Mitchels were never troubled by visitors Ballinrobe, while Ballina also eased past Crossmolina to qualify.

Ballintubber are also through after an impressive performance against Aghamore, while Charlestown could also be heading for the play-offs following their win in Westport's home patch.

But the performance of the weekend came from Knockmore who crushed Garrymore with county player Kevin McLoughlin putting in a star-studded performance.

Claremorris also boosted their hope of qualifying when they returned from Kiltane with both points and Ballaghadereen, with Andy Moran on fire, revived their hopes after beating Davitts.
