The world gets ready to celebrate mayo day

MAYO people around the world will celebrate the inaugural Mayo Day tomorrow (Saturday) with events and celebrations taking place in Mayo communities from Belmullet to Boston, and Killala to Kuala Lumpur.

So what is Mayo Day?

Mayo Day is a celebration of all that is great about the county, a day in the calendar year that Mayo people are claiming for themselves.

This enthusiasm with which Mayo people have seized the opportunity to recognise their County, its people, its majestic landscape, its incredible history and culture certainly shows Mayo is very definitely leading the way in county pride.

An idea born in the Enterprise & Investment Unit of Mayo County Council, Mayo Day has become a truly community-driven event with hundreds of events and activities taking place across the county, the country and around the world.

Mayo’s global diaspora will light Niagara Falls in green and red for Mayo Day, while Toronto Mayo community have planned a Mayo Gala Dinner for the occasion.

Manchester’s Mayo diaspora, one of the most vibrant and engaged overseas communities will celebrate with a whole weekend of sold out events, including a Mayo exhibition, a Mayo showcase of music and dance and much more.

Across the county of Mayo, towns, villages, schools and business are all geared up for Mayo Day. Schools are celebrating the rich history of their county through art and writing competitions, businesses are driving Mayo Day promotions and shop local campaigns, using the day to showcase Mayo produce.

In addition, there will be festivities throughout the county. If you are in Castlebar on Mayo Day, you will have the opportunity to enjoy ‘The General’, a specially created entertainment show about General Humbert and his friendly invasion of Ireland in 1798, followed by fireworks in the county colours of green and red. ‘Spraoi on the Quay’ is a family friendly festival taking place in Westport’s newly redeveloped waterside quay.

And there's a live Mayo Day broadcast from the TF Royal Theatre on Saturday night hosted by Irish TV.
