A battle cry for

A battle cry for the county was recorded yesterday (Friday) in Achill as part of the Mayo Day celebrations.

Events are taking place wherever there are Mayo people right across the globe today as the world celebrates its first ever Mayo Day.

The song 'Maigh Eo' was written by Achill man John McNamara and the students of Achill secondary school, Coláiste Pobail Acla, were in full voice for the recording, accompanied by members of Achill Pipe Band and musicians from Scoil Acla. Irish TV were also at the novel recording.

John says the words Maigh Eo are often seen, be they on football jerseys or flags, but never spoken. He is encouraging people to learn the words of the song and adopt it as a battle cry for the county when our teams are playing or wherever there are Mayo events.

John came up with the idea for the song back in 2013 and the emphasis is on the words 'Maigh Eo'. Pronunciation of the words is split and John is trying to get county people singing the one battle cry and to breath new life back into the two words.
