Three water bursts affect Mayo town

WATER is being restored this evening to the vast majority of customers affected by a burst water main on the Abbey Street and Cathedral Road junction in Ballina.

In an update issued at 6 p.m., Irish Water said following works in the area by Mayo County Council on behalf of Irish Water, the water network was being recharged, with water expected to be restored within hours to the vast majority of properties affected by this unplanned event.

While water was flowing through the pipe, works continued in the past hours in the area to complete the repair.

This is the second burst to be repaired since yesterday morning.

Repairs to a third burst on the Bunree Road will commence overnight and will be locally managed to ensure a supply of water to the majority of customers in this area. However, approximately 70 to 80 properties will be without water in the Lower Bunree area, with tankers available to these households until 9 p.m. tonight and again tomorrow morning if necessary.

Tankers have been mobilised throughout the day to areas affected by these unplanned outages and they will be deployed to supply the remaining properties affected tonight. It is envisaged that this area will have full service restored tomorrow morning.

Vulnerable customers were prioritised throughout the day and tankers will continue to be made available to customers without water.

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tankers and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure.

Irish Water and Mayo County Council have apologised to customers affected by these unplanned bursts. Crews have worked hard since early yesterday morning to complete repairs during an extraordinary situation where three bursts occurred in one town. All available resources are being utilised to minimise disruption and tankers have been organised as an alternative supply for anyone without a water supply.

The supply and service section of the Irish Water website, www.water.ie, will be updated as repairs continue. Any customer with a query in relation to these unplanned events can contact the Irish Water customers care line on 1850 278 278.

A burst which occurred at 11 a.m. at Bachelor's Walk was repaired yesterday at 4 p.m with full service restored to affected customers.
