Ballyhaunis ace Eoghan is destined for a bright future

THE CONNAUGHT TELEGRAPH YOUNG SPORTSTARS OF THE YEAR NO. 9:

EUROPEAN silver is good in any currency and when it comes as a medal won at the European Schoolboys Championships in Romania, then it becomes a treasured possession.

Ballyhaunis boxer Eoghan Lavin, who hails from Swinford, battled hard to lay his hands on the precious metal and was unlucky to come up against a top class Russian who denied him gold. Eoghan is a four-time national champion but he’s had to bide his time for an international opportunity.

It came after he won the lightweight title at this year’s National Junior Cadets. Eoghan overcame stiff opposition from amateur boxing bastions Poland and Bulgaria but he duly obliged to set up a final encounter with the highly regarded Russian.

Eoghan put in two great rounds before tiring in the third, but his experience will undoubtedly stand to this young boxer who seems destined for greater things in the years ahead.
