Art receives Fulbright Award

A MAYO teacher is to teach the Irish language and take classes in America after being announced as a Fulbright Award recipient.

Thirty-seven Fulbright Irish awardees for 2018/19 were presented with awards at a ceremony in the US Ambassador's residence in the Phoenix Park. Students, academics and professionals from 13 HEIs in Ireland and Europe, they will go to 33 leading US institutions to study and collaborate with experts in their fields.

This year’s Fulbright recipients are from diverse disciplines spanning science, languages, technology, medicine, literature and the arts.

Art Ó Súilleabháin, as a Fulbright FLTA, will teach the Irish language and take classes at Catholic Memorial.

Mr. Ó Súilleabháin has been a primary school teacher for 23 years. He was a teacher in the Irish Gaeltacht (Eachléim and Corr na Móna) for five years and a teacher for Hibernia College trainee teachers for nine years (five of those years managing a team of 12 teachers and director of education).

He spent seven years as director of the Mayo Education Centre, which has responsibility for organising and designing courses for primary and post-primary teachers.

The Fulbright Programme in Ireland has been a key driver in cross-Atlantic collaborative research for over 60 years.

Some eight awardees will travel to US Institutions to teach the Irish language.
