James Horan's young guns join big guns in Mayo 'Super 8s'

THE young gun of Westport came with a late flurry of bullets to beat Hollymount-Carramore and book their place in the last eight of the Connacht Gold Mayo senior football championship with a round still to be played.

James Horan's young team, with five Mayo Under 20 players on board, still have to face Claremorris in the final round, but both are through from their group and that game will decide who goes through as group winners.

County champions and four-in-a-row title seekers, Castlebar Mitchels, also booked their place in the knockout stages as they saw off Aghamore with a strong final 10 minutes.

In the same group Ballaghaderreer qualifed after they defeated Ballina Stephenites.

Breaffy and Ballintubber drew but Breaffy look strong enough to beat relegation troubled Davitts in their final game while Ballintubber have to beat or draw with Kitane before their place in the quarterfinals is secured.

Robbie Hennelly pulled down a late free from under the crossbar from Cillian O'Connor to deny Ballintubber the win, the Breaffy goalkeeper taking a slight knock to the head in the process when he collided with the crossbar.

Garrymore have also qualifed for the last eight with a win over Charlestown, who are still in with a big shout for that second place following a draw between Knockmore and Moy Davitts, Brian Reape putting in a man of the match performance for the Bohola club.
