The Storehouse apple tarts - in the running for a Blas na hÉireann Award.

Storehouse Bakery short-listed for prestigious award

THE Storehouse Bakery in Castlebar has been chosen as a finalist in the esteemed Blas na hÉireann Awards.

Over 2,500 products were entered in 100 food and drink categories, making it the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland.

Regular customers of the Storehouse café on Main Street are likely to have enjoyed a slice of apple tart on more than one occasion given that it is one of the most popular treats baked each day.

Blas na hÉireann have recognised this, selecting the tart as a finalist in the pastry category.

The slogan ‘Every Batch From Scratch’ aptly sums up the Storehouse Bakery, as early each morning every single item is made from fresh produce and authentically baked, with no mixtures, no pre-prepared ingredients, just wholesome food combined to make the very best batch.

Commenting on becoming a finalist, artisan bakers Gerry Scahill and Neil McKenna said: “We are delighted that our apple tarts have been selected as a finalist in such a prestigious competition.

Blas na hÉireann finalists and winners are selected via the biggest blind tasting test in the country. The criteria on which the product is judged as well as the judging system itself was developed in conjunction with the Food Science Department of UCC and is now recognised as an international industry standard. To have The Storehouse competing in an awards ceremony of this calibre is something we are very proud of.”

The winners will be announced over a two-day event taking place this Friday and Saturday.
