Volunteers clean up after Mayo dashboard litter louts

A MAJOR operation has taken place today along a busy Mayo motorway to clean up roadside rubbish discarded by dashboard litter louts.

Up to 25 volunteers joined members of Castlebar Tidy Towns in the undertaking along the N5 from Mulroy's Roundabout to the exit for the village of Turlough.

The amount of rubbish collected in two hours - 150 bags - surprised all those involved and sadly reflected the lack of respect so many motorists have for the local environment.

The committee has issued a fresh appeal to all vehicle owners and passengers to uphold a green policy by disposing of all litter in a proper manner and to never throw it out of a window.

"It would make such a difference to our efforts in improving the status of the county town in the annual National Tidy Towns competition," a committee spokesperson added.
