The potholes at Ayle, Westport, were full of rain water today despite repairs carried out last Friday.

Pothole repairs along Mayo Pilgrims Way last just three days

POTHOLE repairs carried out by Mayo County Council to a road at Drimneen, Ayle, Westport, have lasted just three days.

The Connaught Telegraph last week highlighted the fact the road in question, which is part of the Pilgrims Way between Ballintubber and Croagh Patrick, had 14 potholes along a one-mile stretch - much to the frustration and annoyance of local residents.

The council responded by carrying out temporary repairs to the road last Friday, but the potholes opened up again following last night's and today's rains.

Now residents want the surface to be properly repaired for their use as well as to maintain Ireland's most historic Pilgrims Way.

They insist they are paying motor tax the same as every vehicle owner and deserve to have a proper road to service their community rather than one that is an embarrassment.

"We will keep campaigning until action is taken. We have been silent for too long," a resident stated.
