EU candidate disappoints poster-free campaign

CASTLEBAR Tidy Towns has expressed disappointment this evening (Saturday) over the appearance of election posters in the town this weekend.

The group said it received many calls today from Castlebar residents expressing their disappointment that posters had gone up around the town.

A post on Facebook said: 'It seems like other towns, including Westport and Roscommon, Castlebar is experiencing similar frustrations with one particular candidate.'

The focus of the poster-free campaign has been to eliminate pole posters in the urban area, and the committee informed each of the declared candidates in both local and European elections about their campaign in March to give them fair notice. This has been further promoted in local papers, radio and online.

The group explained: 'Most local and European candidates have observed the request not to erect pole posters and we thank them for that. We are dependent on goodwill so when one candidate does not keep to the request, we feel we need to inform the community.

'This week we have been busy cleaning the town in advance of Mayo Day, Pink Ribbon cycle and Women's Mini Marathon. All great community events for which we like to have the town looking its best, and we will be out tomorrow also to continue that work. These posters on this weekend do not help.

'Today we have tried to contact the campaign to ask them to remove them but have so far received no response.

'Please share to show your support for our campaign.'
