Passing of former Mayo president of the Golfing Union of Ireland

THE death has taken place of Gerard (Gar) Golden, Phc, PC, Leenane Road, and formerly Bridge Street, Westport.

A widely popular and respected personality, he served as president of the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1980 and was chairman of the Connacht Branch of the GUI from 1985 to 1988.

The deceased was also a past captain and president of Westport Golf Club. He also served as a member of the former Westport Town Council.

Paying tribute to him, the cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, said the deceased played a massive role in the local community through his involvement in public life, business and voluntary groups.

"He was a great man to go for advice and he helped and supported so many people over the years through his pharmacy business," he added.

Gar was predeceased by wives Judy in 1968 and Agatha in 2019, brother Joe, son David and grandson Tim.

He is survived by his sons Conor and John, daughters Pauline, Judy and Laura, son-in-law Ben, daughter-in-law Lorna and Kim, sisters Margaret and Mary, grandchildren, extended family, relatives and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

His remains will be reposing at Navin's Funeral Home, Westport, from 4 to 6 p.m. tomorrow (Sunday).

Requiem Mass takes place in St. Mary's Church at 12.30 p.m. on Monday with burial afterwards in Aughavale Cemetery.
