Action from the Breaffy and Ballina Stephenites encounter

Breaffy agony as Mitchels, Ballina, Ballintubber and Ballaghaderreen advance in Mayo

LAST year’s beaten finalists, Breaffy, crashed out of the Mayo senior football championship, Ballina Stephenites taking out Peter Forde’s men in the game of the weekend which needed extra-time before a winner emerged at MacHale Park, Castlebar.

The Stephenites should have won the game in normal time but let a six-point lead slip from their grasp, Sean Regan’s goal giving them command of the game.

In extra-time it was super sub Simon Leonard who stole the headlines as he scored 1-3, Breaffy’s only reply coming from a Conor O’Shea free.

The win puts Ballina into a county semi-final meeting with champions Ballintubber, who had four points to spare over Belmullet.

In the other side of the draw Castlebar Mitchels will meet Ballaghaderreen in the penultimnate round.

Mitchels looked in serious trouble when trailing Knockmore by five points early in the second half.

But thanks to the power of Paddy Durcan they fought their way back, a goal from Neil Douglas helping them over the winning line.

There is with work to be done, however, if they are to make the decider.

Ballaghaderreen put up big score to outclass Davitts in their other semi-final, Andy Moran coming up with 1-5 for the east Mayo side who look serious contenders on this display.
