Tooreen .....................0-18

Castlebar Mitchels .. 1 -13

TOOREEN completed a hat trick of Mayo senior hurling championship titles but not before they were forced to sweat at Elverys MacHale Park where rank outsiders Castlebar Mithcles hit them with a late goal to come within two points of the champions who were seeking their 30th title.

It finished 0-18 to 1-13 in favour of Tooreen but they had to battle right to the end as Castlebar never gave up the struggl.e

The outsiders stuck with the champions all the way and trailed by just three points at half-time - 0-10 to 0-7 – Corey Scahill proving their main scoring source and he finished on 0-7.

When Tooreen tore into the second half with four unanswered points, including two gems from play from Sean Kenny, Castlebar looked to be struggling.

But they responded magnificently with Scahil and James Gallagher hitting some great scores.

Yhe combined scoring power of Fergal and Shane Boland, however, along with Kenny, had Tooreen five ahead as injury time approached.

It was two minutes into injury time when Padraig O'Flynn connected with a long delivery which he ficked to the net and suddenly the gap was down to two.

However, Tooreen were not panicking and held out for a deserving win.

Castlebar Mitchels, nevertheless, will take great heart from this performance, particularly in that first half when they stood toe-to-toe with Tooreen and matched them in many areas until the close of the half when Tooreen kicked on by three points.
