New bollards causing traffic snarls in busy Mayo town

AN elected member of Mayo County Council has drawn attention to the negative impact of newly installed bollards at the corner of Ellison Street and Duke Street in Castlebar.

Councillor Ger Deere said they are causing major traffic flow problems as well as impinging on delivery services to local businesses.

He said: “Two of the bollards located outside Sports Direct need to be relocated as large trucks can't take the corner.

“This led to huge traffic problems at the location on Christmas Eve when traffic was backed up around the town for more than an hour.

"A truck could not take the corner and the driver had to be redirected with the assistance of members of the public.

“I am calling on the council to address this issue as a metter or urgency.

"We cannot have such traffic problems occurring on a regular basis in a busy commercial town.

“I witnessed what happened and it has to be tackled immediately.”
