New bus shelters to be provided across Mayo

MOVES are underway to provide shelters at a number of bus stops around the county.

Just over 80 stops have been identified and only a handful have shelters, Mayo County Council senior official Tom Gilligan has revealed.

It is proposed to introduce a policy to provide for shelters in the major towns, funded through the National Transport Authority.

Each municipal district is to be asked to draw up a priority list of four to eight stops initially.

The National Transport Authority are looking at a series of wheelchair accessible measures in Ballina, Westport, Castlebar and Claremorris initially as they roll out new coaches which would be more wheelchair accessible.

Councillor Johnny O'Malley said in Westport, people take shelter in an alley or hotel and then have to rush for the bus, sometimes missing it.

It would encourage people to use the bus if there were shelters.
