Death of director of Mayo arts centre

The death has taken place of painter Veronica Bolay, a member of Aosdána and the Royal Hibernian Academy. She was aged 78.

Born in war-time Germany in 1941, she moved to Ireland in 1971 and lived in Mayo and Dublin.

Her work formed part of a pioneering 1978 exhibition of women artists held in the Project gallery in Dublin where she exhibited with, among others, Camille Souter and the late Mary Farl Powers.

The poet Paul Durcan has written two poems about her paintings: 'The Hay Carrier' and 'Island Musician Going Home'.

Her work forms part of the collections of AIB, ESB, Bank of Ireland, AXA, Dublin City University, National Self-Portrait Collection, University of Limerick, NUI Maynooth, Boyle Civic Collection, Irish Life, Department of the Marine, Mayo County Council, Intel, and Arthur Anderson & Co.

She was a member of the board of directors at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar.

She was married to the actor, Sunday Miscellany writer and translator Peter Jankowsky and is survived by her son Aengus.
