Mayo Green Party candidate singled out as 'election dark horse'

A LEADING political commentator has singled out Mayo Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh as 'an election dark horse' who could spring a surprise in the four-seat Mayo constituency.

Writing in the Irish Times, journalist Harry McGee wrote: "Saoirse McHugh performed well for the Greens in the European Parliament elections in the Midlands North-West constituency.

"But the Greens have just one per cent support in the constituency in which she is now running.

"However, Mayo backed Mulranny GP Jerry Cowley previously.

"McHugh has a big personality, but a victory would still be a big deal."
