Storm Jorge set to impact on Mayo

A STATUS Orange wind warning has been issued for Mayo as Storm Jorge looms.

A spokesperson for Met. Eireann says some severe winds are expected during Saturday associated with Storm Jorge (Hor-hay).

Southwest quickly veering west and later northwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts of 110 to 130km/h, possibly higher in very exposed areas with an elevated risk of coastal flooding.

The warning is valid from 6 a.m. on Saturday to 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Meanwhile, a Status Yellow rainfall warning will be in place for Mayo from 00.01 a.m. on Friday to 23.59 p.m. on Saturday.

Rainfall accumulations of 20 to 30mm are expected during Friday and Saturday, with a continuing risk of flooding due to already saturated ground and elevated river levels.

The National Emergency Coordination Group is to meet tomorrow in advance of Storm Jorge which is expected to bring torrential rain and high winds to Ireland.

This is the third named storm in one month, and with land already saturated and rivers already very high, there are serious concerns of widespread additional flood damage.

Met Éireann pointed out today that rainfall amounts in ten of its 25 weather stations have already set new records for the month of February.

The group consists of all government departments, local authorities, gardaí, the Army, Civil Defence, Emergency services, ESB, Irish Water and other public utilities.
