Mayo community grieving tragic death of much-loved personality
A Mayo community has joined in paying tribute to a much-loved local personality whose tragic death in a road traffic accident has evoked a tremendous sense of loss and sorrow.
Sheila Holian (née Curtin), Glebe Street, Ballinrobe, died at Mayo University Hospital yesterday from injuries sustained when struck by a car while she was walking near her home last Thursday afternoon.
She died peacefully surrounded by her loving family in the excellent care of ICU, Mayo University Hospital.
The deceased had a long association with a number of local organisations, including Ballinrobe Golf Club.
Sheila will be forever loved and missed by her children Damien, Anne, Shelly and Edel.
She is also mourned by her daughter-in-law Juliette, sons in law Nicol, Patrick and John, grandchildren Patrick, Daniel, Patrick, Katie, Sean and great-grandchildren, sisters Mary and Ita and sister-in -law Máire, cousin Martin, nieces and nephews, cousins, best friends Betty, Margaret and Irene, her wide circle of friends, young and old and her lovely neighbours on Glebe Street as well as her constant canine companions Louie and Holly.
Heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
Sheila was predeceased by her beloved husband Pat, her parents Michael and May, her brothers Joe, Paddy and Michael, her sisters Colette and baby Helena, brother in laws Paddy, Fred and Brian, sister in laws June and Lynn.
Local Councillor Michael Burke said the town is both shocked and devastated by the sad loss of one of Ballinrobe's most popular and best-loved personalities.
"Sheila lived in Glebe Street all her life and was such an integral figure within the town centre and gave so much to the community. She will be greatly missed, a woman blessed with so many lovely qualities.
"A shadow of immense sadness has been cast over the town by the tragedy and my heart goes out to the families impacted," he added.
Warm tributes are also being paid to her on social media.
One stated: "What a wonderful woman. It was always a pleasure to be in her company, wonderful chats and great laughs."
"Such a thoughtful beautiful lady who was so kind," another said.
"Not only was she an amazing neighbour, but a kind and loving friend." a further tribute observed.
The funeral arrangements will be announced later.
