Andrew Hickey

Andrew makes his mark on the fairways

BALLYHAUNIS golfer Andrew Hickey just goes from strength to strength these days.

Andrew, who played his first round of golf at the age of 10, played his way into third place in the Irish Under 18 Open Championship the weekend before last.

This is a wonderful success for the young Ballyhaunis man by any standards, playing against the cream of Ireland’s hottest young golfers. Great also to see Ballyhaunis Golf Club mentioned on the leader board in one of the most prestigious golf events of the year.

There was a double reason for Andrew to celebrate as he has also become the first ever Ballyhaunis golfer to play off scratch handicap. When one takes into account the hundreds of golfers who have played on the Coolnaha fairways over the years since the club was first established back in 1929, this is a unique and marvellous achievement and one to be proud of.

Andrew is son of Mary and James Hickey, Greenwood, Ballyhaunis.

Well done Andrew – a young sports star to look out for.
