Dympna Smith and Michael 'Fish' Cunningham are putting in the practise hours for Castlebar Golf Club's Strictly Come Dancing event.

Dympna has gone fishing

As promised, we are going to feature each of the eight couples who have sacrificed their lives and indeed their limbs for Castlebar Golf Club’s Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser, starting with Dympna Smith and Michael 'Fish' Cunningham.

It just goes to show you, you can teach anyone, and I mean anyone, to dance as a case in point is Fish Cunningham - and some say he is more like a fish out of water when it comes to dancing. But word from the 19th hole is that Dympna Smith and Fish have been setting the bar very high - and I’m not talking about a high stool here.

They will be dancing the Tango, which is a fast tempo dance from Argentina - some say the place the Cunningham family originated from, but our researches are still working on that. However, you can certainly discern that Latin blood in Fish’s sculptured visage.

I tried contacting Dympna for a quote during the week but a ‘Gone Fish-ing’ sign has been erected on her front door, which would indicate that she is spending a lot of time rehearsing and has her sights set on the coveted trophy, while Fish has been spotted practicing his Tango routine in the Brewery Cup and getting under Majella’s feet in the process.

Tickets for the final can be obtained from club members at a cost of €10. They have already held a very successful quiz night in Mick Bynre’s and the eight participating couples are organising various fundraising events over the next few weeks. Club members are asked to support the initiative, which will help both Mayo Roscommon Hospice and Castlebar Golf Club.

Meanwhile, the Strictly Come Dancing competition final will be held in the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on Saturday night, March 28.
