Dáil candidate settles legal action against Sunday World

A CANDIDATE who contested two Dáil elections in separate west of Ireland constituencies has settled a case for alleged libel against Sunday Newspapers Limited, publishers of the Sunday World.

Gerard (Gerry) O'Boyle, Carrowreagh, Ballyhaunis, claims he was defamed in an article published by the Sunday World in October 2014.

At a sitting of the Circuit Civil Court in Castlebar today, Judge Rory MacCabe was told that the matter had been settled and could be struck out with no order as to costs.

Mr. O'Boyle was represented in his proceedings by Fanning and Kelly, Solicitors and Lawyers, Hatch Street, Dublin, and John V. Geary, solicitor, Castlebar.

The plaintiff is a prominent member of Land League West which campaigns on behalf of people facing bank repossessions of their homes.

He unsuccessfully contested the Roscommon-South Leitrim by-election in October 2014 and last year's general election, this time in the Mayo Constituency.

No details of the settlement reached were revealed today in court.
