Good news as timeline announced for Newport Sewerage Scheme

THE Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, has received a detailed timeline for the delivery of the Newport Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Minister Ring said: “I have received a detailed timeline for the delivery of the Newport Waste Water Treatment Plant.

“This follows on from my recent meeting with Sean Laffey, the Head of Asset Management for Irish Water at which I conveyed the need for clear information on the rollout of this vital project.

“This is an important development for the people of Newport, who for years have had a sub-standard sewage disposal system. We now have a detailed schedule for the delivery of the plant.

“Irish Water have confirmed to me that a design team has been appointed and work has started on the Stage 1, the Feasibility Report which is due to be delivered by the end of 2018.

“Stage 2, the design stage, involves the carrying out detailed local studies, followed by the completion of the planning process and the tendering process. Once this process is complete the construction phase (Stage 3) will begin.

“Newport is now a major tourism destination. Investments in local infrastructure, such as the Newport Waste Water Treatment Plant, are vital in order to allow Newport to grow and prosper.

“I welcome the progress now being made by Irish Water in relation to this matter and I urge them and Mayo County Council to ensure that this major project is delivered without delay.

“People in Newport have waited a long time to have a properly functioning sewage disposal system. It is a major priority for the local community.”
