Contract signed for road works on N60 near Balla

THE contract for the construction of the upgrade of the N60 at Lagnamuck between Mayo County Council and P&D Lydon Civil Engineers was signed today at Aras an Chontae in Castlebar with works commencing in the coming weeks and due for completion before the end of 2019.

The project is the first of a number of minor improvements planned for the N60 Castlebar to Claremorris Road.

The N60 Lagnamuck scheme is located immediately west of Balla town.

Said Peter Hynes, chief executive, Mayo County Council: “The N60 is a vital link connecting the vibrant community of Balla to the county town and is part of an important commuter route between Claremorris and Castlebar.

“This is an investment in our local communities, the enhancement of our roadways is imperative for the safety of drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. We are always mindful that the better our roads infrastructure, the better our opportunity to attract tourism, enterprise and direct investment.”

The road scheme will comprise of approximately 1.4km of mainly online upgrade and consist of the following elements: widening and realignment of the existing road to a type 2 single carriageway, including 7.0m carriageway; 2 x 0.5m hard strips and 2 x 2.5m verges; cycle tracks and footpaths; drainage works; earthworks; utility diversions; road pavement; road markings; access and accommodation works; ancillary road works; traffic management; landscaping and environmental mitigation works.
