The late Sean Bourke

Sean Bourke's kindness as Mayo mortician is recalled at his funeral Mass

THE kindness, care and attention Sean Bourke put into his work as a senior mortician at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar, was recalled at his funeral Mass today.

In a homily, Fr. Conal Eustace, parish priest of Castlebar, said Mr. Bourke would be fondly remembered by the many bereaved families whose loved ones passed through the mortuary in the 25 years he spent there as a senior patholohy technician..

Hundreds again turned out for Mr. Bourke’s funeral today as they did yesterday evening when the remains were removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary from the hospital mortuary, accompanied by a guard of honour organised by the local Fianna Fail party.

Sean Bourke served as a Fianna Fáil elected representative in Castlebar from 1985 to 2009. He served on both the Town Council and Mayo County Council.

Present members of Mayo County Council and former colleagues of Mr. Bourke on the Town Council were prominent amongst the attendance at the funeral ceremonies.

Mourners included Peter Hynes, chief executive of Mayo County Council, Padraig Flynn, former EU Commissioner and his wife, Dorothy, and Councillor Blackie Gavin, cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council.

Staff of Mayo County Council attended in large numbers as did former colleagues at Mayo University Hospital.

In a eulogy, Neill Grimley spoke of his father-in-law’s warmth towards his family and recalled the many witty sayings for which he was noted.

Away from hospital duties and his work as a political representative, Mr. Bourke was noted for his knowledge of livestock and the gifts brought to the altar reflected this interest.

Sean Bourke was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.

Myy his gentle soul rest in peace.
