Call to ban election posters in Swinford

SWINFORD Tidy Towns are running a campaign to have election posters banned in the town.

Ahead of this May's local and European elections they are asking if people would like to see a voluntary ban across Ireland, and particularly in Swinford, in online polls being ran through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

So far, there has been overwhelming support for the move, with 96% of people in favour of banning posters.

The matter will be discussed at a Ballina Municipal District meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) where Councillors Neil Cruise and Michael Smyth have tabled a motion asking candidates not to erect posters in the Ballina and Swinford electoral areas in the run up to the elections.

Recently, councillors in south Mayo agreed to keep their area poster-free.
